Many festivals are held throughout the year to help preserve the town’s strong sense of family and community spirit. Chesterton festivals include the annual Chesterton Art Fair, held in August and the annual Wizard of Oz Festival, held in September. County and area festivals include Maple Sugar Time, Porter County Heritage Air Show and the Duneland Harvest Festival.
Antique shopping is also a very popular hobby of Chesterton residents. In addition to an antique mall, Chesterton houses more than 10 specialty antique shops, representing a popular past time of Chesterton residents young and old as well as the town’s respect for its history.
Chesterton was first occupied by the Potawatomi tribe. These Native Americans were devoted to the area’s fertile and water-rich natural landscapes and survived by farming, hunting, fishing and trapping. The town was first incorporated on October 5, 1869. The Thomas Wiesemann's Resale Stand, Dr. Hiram Green's drug store, and Horace Pratt's blacksmith shop were of the earliest businesses in Chesterton. The oldest mercantile location in the town was the M. Smith & Son building. The establishment of the Indiana Dunes State Park in 1925 largely helped in the town’s growth.
